What causes acne in men and how to get rid of it on your face, neck and back

A cne is more common than most people might think and what causes acne is more complex than simply your face being dirty. Below we explain what causes acne and what to look out for when buying skincare and makeup that can help get rid of acne.

What causes acne?

There are six types of spots that can be symptoms of acne; blackheads whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. They can appear on the face, neck, back and chest.

The face is most common in both genders but men particularly suffer with it on their backs.

Acne happens mostly during puberty because of changing hormone levels, but some people can be genetically predisposed to having acne too.

Certain hormones can cause the glands in your skin to produce more sebum than usual and an increase in testosterone in men is why they tend to have oily skin for longer.

Men with severe acne might need help from a doctor.

What not to do

Because acne isn’t caused, necessarily, by dirt washing your skin more than twice a day, or scrubbing it until its red raw will make little difference. It could also make things worse.

Wash using a mild cleanser with lukewarm water.

Is there an acne cure?

While there is no known cure for acne (yet), a paper published in 2018 showed the first steps towards creating a vaccine against acne.

“Once validated by a large-scale clinical trial, the potential impact of our findings is huge for the hundreds of millions of individuals suffering from acne vulgaris,” Chun-Ming Huang, from the University of California, San Diego, said at the time.
